An affinity for the semiotics of conflict becomes immediately apparent in Last Tango’s fourth exhibition: Fiona Banner with her longstanding use of found and transformed military aircraft to examine the ways in which conflict is mythologised through popular culture and Peter Voss-Knude with his work that musically relates to the life of the soldier. The material and the human aspects of conflict are juxtaposed wherein typically masculine iconographies are sampled and reified into forms and constellations that are of a sensuous nature. Another cornerstone of the exhibition is language with both artists exploring the bewilderment of non-understanding and the complexity of the spoken and written word: how it serves us, be it through the flow of pop lyrics or the playfulness of sculptural full stops. The expressive potential of the body is yet another motif made manifest through the uniform of the pinstripe, a body armour, a jockstrap, or a pair of breasts.

FIONA BANNER
Boob/ks

The constant conflict between words and their meaning is central to Fiona Banner’s conceptual approach, which utilises drawing, sculpture, installation and film. Her use of military aircraft juxtaposes the brutal and the humorous in her exploration of how historical events become fictionalised over time. Often working between the intersection of word and image, Banner has a long running imprint The Vanity Press through which she playfully publishes not only books and posters but also unique objects and performances.

PETER VOSS-KNUDE
The Male Version of A Sports Bra

Danish artist Peter Voss-Knude is the first artist ever to have written a pop music record in collaboration with an army. The thematic of the songs range from a young mans first kill, to wanting to go back to war, to the difficulty of addressing love between men. These controversial topics, not commonly and openly voiced by the soldier, are what the artist seeks to unfold.

PIO ABAD
Pampangueña (A Working Biography)

Pio Abad presents new unique digital prints on silk as part of his ongoing series Pampangueña (A Working Biography). Since 2012 Abad has been using the scarf as a surface for depicting alternative or repressed histories of power. In this work Abad exhibits a series of portraits of the actress and activist Jane Fonda.

3. FIONA BANNER & PETER VOSS-KNUDE
SIDE STEP: PIO ABAD

07.10.17 – 02.12.17
